This is an easy guide to getting started with personal development. These are just some basics, there are many personal development books that can help you as well.
1. Allocating time for you, everyday! This is so basic, yet so important. Many people spend their whole day in giving of themselves to other people or to their job, and they do not find time for themselves. Give yourself 15 minutes to reflect and focus on the most important person in your life, which is YOU.
2. Read or listen to personal development information. Find time to learn about personal development and know the positive and inspirational messages. You can use the 15 minutes allocated for yourself for reading a chapter of a book. If you drive, then put in a tape or CD. This is making use of the available time since you need not spare extra time for listening.
3. Make plans for you! Decide what really needs to be done and do it. Often we want to do something but make excuses if we can’t do it. The reality is that by the time we think up excuses for not doing something, we could have done it. What have you been procrastinating over? The time is now to get it done! Then there will be space in your mind for other thoughts.
4. Never be scared to make a mistake. You can only be successful by making an attempt. Many times throughout history, things that seemed like mistakes actually resulted in great ideas. You do what you want to do and fear of failure should not stop you.
5. Do not procrastinate when making a decision just because you’re afraid it might be incorrect. If you sit on the fence then nothing will be gained. So as long as you make a decision, whether it is a right or wrong one, you are on the right path to making the right one. Be decisive! You may have to practice.
6. In a diary, record your thoughts, ideas, feelings and personal growth. One of the ways of measuring your progress is by keeping a journal. This way you can analyse your past journey. For your future projects, it can come in handy as a great source of material. You can start with writing down thoughts and ideas in a journal if one of your goals is to write a book.
7. Work hard to realize your dreams. If you find things not working out, make sure you are flexible and willing to change the way you carry things out. Things don’t always go the way you want, even when you have a plan in place. Remember that if you are clear about your destination, your route can be changed as long as you end up where you needed to be; it won’t matter that it took a little longer to get there.
8. You have to review your goals daily. You might find it helpful to post photos of your goals so you can visualize them upon waking up and before you go to sleep. We react more positively to images than text.
9. Wear a loose fitting rubber band around your wrist. Every time when you think a negative thought, pull the rubber band so that it snaps you on your wrist. Yes, it definitely will hurt! That is the point! Keep doing this for 30 consecutive days and see what happens – how your behaviour and thoughts change.
10. Your achievements must be celebrated. Reward yourself for your progress – You deserve that much!
